The opening game of a four-game NL West battle inside of Coors Field on Monday will happen as the San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies face off. The Padres will send southpaw Sean Manaea to pitch as he is coming off a losing effort against the Seattle Mariners as he went 3.1 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Slam Diego? Not Right Now

The San Diego Padres have not been a good offensive team up to this point as they are tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals, and Tampa Bay Rays for 23rd in the majors with a .684 team OPS while also scoring 4.34 runs per game. Third baseman Manny Machado has been hitting incredibly well as he has a .915 OPS with 14 home runs and 50 RBI with seven stolen bases on eight attempts thus far. He has been struggling throughout his previous seven games as he is 3-for-23 with a pair of homers and four RBI with four walks and 10 strikeouts in that stretch.

Sean Manaea has been a decent pitcher when looking at his Baseball Savant page as he is in the 66th percentile in strikeout percentage this season. He has been struggling with his control as he has a 9.5 walk percentage up to this point. Manaea has a four-pitch mix and his sinker has been thrown 61.8 percent of the time. He faced the Rockies once back in 2020 as a member of the Oakland Athletics as he lost as he threw 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Rox Rock Right Now

The Colorado Rockies have been climbing the rankings in terms of their offensive production as they are sitting at 11th in the majors with a .720 OPS and are averaging 4.43 runs per game up to this point. First baseman C.J. Cron has been hitting the ball incredibly well as he has a .901 OPS with 20 homers and 66 RBI with 23 walks and 91 strikeouts so far. He has been clicking incredibly well in his eight games in July as he has a .310/.375/.724 slashline with three home runs, 10 RBI, and four runs scored in that span of games.

Jose Urena has not pitched enough this season to factor into the percentile rankings on his Baseball Savant page. He has been pitching to contact this year as he has an 8.1 strikeout percentage so far this season. Urena has a four-pitch arsenal and throws his sinker 51.4 percent of the time on the mound. He has not pitched against the Padres since the 2019 regular season so it will be an interesting matchup to see how he fares now.
